This past weekend I traveled to the Bay Area to deliver paintings to buyers. I was excited and nervous as these had been sold over the internet and the buyers had not yet seen their selections in person. All of them had seen my work before but still...that is trust!
While in Walnut Creek, CA I visited a long time friend, once roommate Becky. While we toured her new home for possible painting sites...what would look good where...She surprised me by pulling out a painting I gifted her in 1967 for her 21st birthday.
Geisha, 3ft X 3.5 ft, Acylic on canvas
I was stunned. I had not seen this work in almost 50 years! The actual size is approximate because the bottom is wider than the top. Luckily Jonelle was there to tell the story of how I happen to use a trapzoid sharp canvas. It seemed that another art student had already taken my prepared canvas (in those day we made our own canvases from scratch) and used it. "Oh, you can just use one of mine!" I just didn't notice her poor craftmanship til too late!
Not only has this painting aged well but so has the birthday girl, Becky!
She will love the idea of her picture sideways! I will have to correct later.
