Lessons Learned

Remember a few weeks ago my pouch making attempt? Well figured it would not do my any harm to try again (mantra: practice makes perfect). I was gifted some unusal handmade printed linen fabric which I altered with neon paints.

Managed to make the same mistake as the first one...not catching the zipper between the outer and inner fabrics. This time at least it was only on one side.

Since this was a small pouch (zip only 7 inches) I did not redo.

Next I tried another pouch version with a longer zip (14") and a more open closure (???).

One might ask: "Why did she use that fabric for the lining?" (Well, that would be rude.) But that's what I had that was right amount.

I made the exact same error but this time I used the ever present seam ripper and amended my  error. It helped that I hadn't completed the sewing before noticing the mistake!

I put everything away and decided that maybe sewing pouches just isn't my thing but really one pouch out of three ain't too bad!

 

Oh, Just a Simple Small Pouch

You know those tutorials that show a simple fabric pouch with a zipper closure...cute lining, wonderful exterior fabric? Well, do not be fooled!

If you sew only occassionaly (don't remember how to change the machine foot) and have mental limitations of visualizing certain concepts do not even try...unless you are up for it! I wanted to do this project to try a few new things out. Using Tyvek as fabric (USPS envelope) and a sample of dyed fabric that Colleen Darling made at a workshop. I painted the Tyvek with acrylic paint and just sort of winged the rest (maybe I shouldn't do that so much!)

I love how the Tyvek turned out...looks like water. The pouch is actually very nice and I am happy with it but the mental gymnastics for assembly was scary. ( the pull for the zipper is from the Sorrento Hotel, Seattle WA a great place for a weekend stay!)

Have gdsons coming so will be off line til I've had my fill!

How I Spent My Vacation In Mexico

Actually I haven't been to Mexico in years but I crocheted this bag during the holidays...so IF I had gone to Mexico I could have taken this bag with me!

Much of the yarn I used is leftovers (aka scrap yarn) and the really great colors are needlepoint yarn.

As I changed yarns I didn't cut off the tails (aka lazy) so at the end I added the beads. The bag is lined.

Lady With A Blue Skull Cap

This was a fun project. I always enjoy using lots of my art supplies! Cotton muslin left over from another piece( you can see ink shadows to the right side), then drew figure and painted in colors with NeocolorII crayons that brush out with water pen. When all was dry and another few days I embroidered and beaded. You ask "What's it going to be?" Don't know, just know that it is!

Blast from the Past Handbag

This bag was made in about 1978 or so. Las Alas meaning wings and made in remembrance of a retreat at the Sequoia Retreat Center in Ben Lomond, CA. All hand stitched.

Oilcloth Scraps...Voila! a bag!

Thanks to friend for the scraps of oilcloth and webbing. I hope the recipient is happy with her new bag!

Making a tote with original art

Made this tote with a print done with photo fabric through my computer's printer. The I backed the piece with a  contrasting fabric and then sewed onto linen fabric. Those frayed edges are intentional.

Fiddling with Ficklesticks
